Recreational Vehicle
Insurance in
Tennessee and Mississippi
Motorcycles, boats, ATVs, personal watercraft, and RVs all need their own coverage — your auto policy does not extend to any of them. We shop Progressive, National General, Liberty Mutual, and GEICO to protect the things you enjoy most.
What Recreational Insurance Actually Does
Recreational vehicle insurance is a category of specialized coverage designed for vehicles and watercraft that fall outside your standard personal auto policy. Each type of recreational vehicle has its own risk profile, its own state requirements (or lack thereof), and its own policy form — which means each deserves a dedicated review.
For Mid-South families who ride motorcycles through Shelby County, launch boats on Pickwick Lake or Arkabutla Lake, take ATVs to Tims Ford or off-road parks in DeSoto County, or travel across Tennessee and Mississippi in an RV, the right recreational coverage means being protected wherever the road — or water — takes you.
Recreational Vehicles That Need Their Own Policy
Motorcycles and Scooters
Tennessee requires liability coverage for all street-legal motorcycles. Mississippi does as well. A dedicated motorcycle policy also covers your bike for physical damage, theft, and accessories. Seasonal policies are available for bikes that are stored during winter months.
Boats and Personal Watercraft
Neither Tennessee nor Mississippi requires boat insurance by law, but responsible ownership does. A boat policy covers the hull, motor, and trailer, plus liability if you cause injury or property damage on the water. Personal watercraft (Jet Skis, WaveRunners) have their own specialized policy forms.
ATVs, UTVs, and Golf Carts
Off-road recreational vehicles used beyond your own property need dedicated coverage. Your homeowners policy may offer limited coverage on your own land, but trail riding, park use, and road use in permitted communities (like some DeSoto County golf cart corridors) require a separate policy.
RVs, Travel Trailers, and Motorhomes
An RV combines elements of auto and homeowners coverage in a single policy. Whether you own a Class A motorhome, a fifth-wheel, or a travel trailer, coverage typically includes the vehicle structure, contents, liability while parked as a residence, and roadside assistance.
Core Recreational Coverage Components
Liability Coverage
Protects you if you injure someone or damage their property while operating your recreational vehicle. Required for motorcycles in Tennessee and Mississippi; strongly recommended for all other recreational vehicles where accidents can cause significant harm to others.
Physical Damage (Collision and Comprehensive)
Collision covers damage to your vehicle from an accident. Comprehensive covers theft, vandalism, storm damage, and other non-collision losses. For boats, comprehensive-equivalent coverage protects against sinking, fire, and water-related damage beyond collision.
Uninsured Watercraft / Motorist Coverage
For motorcycles, uninsured motorist coverage is available to protect you if an at-fault driver has no insurance. For boats, uninsured watercraft coverage provides similar protection on the water. Both are wise additions given the prevalence of uninsured operators.
Accessories and Custom Equipment
Standard policies may not fully cover aftermarket accessories, custom paint, upgraded equipment, or personal effects carried on recreational vehicles. Scheduled endorsements or separate floaters ensure your investment in customization is protected.
What's Typically Excluded
- Racing and Competitive Events — Damage sustained during organized racing, track days, or competitive events is excluded from standard recreational vehicle policies. Specialty event coverage is available separately.
- Commercial Use — Using a recreational vehicle for commercial purposes (charter fishing, paid tours, delivery) is excluded under personal policies. Commercial marine or vehicle coverage is required.
- Wear, Mechanical Breakdown, and Deterioration — Gradual wear, engine failure, and mechanical breakdown are not covered by recreational vehicle insurance. Extended warranties or service contracts address these costs.
- Operation Under the Influence — Claims arising from operating a recreational vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs may be denied, and coverage for third-party liability may still apply while personal coverage does not.
- Personal Belongings Beyond Policy Limits — Electronics, fishing gear, clothing, and other personal items in or on a recreational vehicle are covered up to policy sub-limits. Valuable items may require scheduled coverage.
